Fox Glacier to Punakaiki

Day 29 (14.2.2013): Fox Glacier
Wow – heli-hiking is awesome.
What is it?
First we got outfitted with proper leather hiking boots, socks, mittens and hat if needed. Then we started with a 10mins helicopter flight over fox glacier at the west coast, landed on the glacier. And off we got sorted with crampons to get on our shoes to go for a 2hrs hike on the glacier. We saw some absolutely stunning blue ice formations or features as they call it. Then we were picked up by the helicopter again and flown back into town.

Afterwards I/ we hit the road and made our way via Franz Josef (another glacier, actually named after the Austrian Kaiser) northwards along the coast. Passing Hokitika and Greymouth, we stopped finally close to Pancake Rocks in Punakaiki.
