Wow, that was sooo cool. One of the reasons I stopped in Dubai was to go on a desert safari and do some dune bashing. This was a fun & action packed afternoon and evening – I loved it! We started at around 3pm at our hotel. Both an American and I were promised the front seat – so we flipped a coin (his idea) and I won. Yeah! Front seat was even cooler! After some more pick-ups from other hotels and annoying Dubai traffic, it was only about half an hour in our Toyota Land Cruiser until we reached our destination somewhere close to the border of Oman. That’s where the biggest dunes of the Emirates are located. And then the fun began. Our guide & driver Taj defeated anything I thought I knew about the stability of cars. We were driving or rather sliding through the dunes at angles where the car should have tipped over – definitely – but it didn’t thanks to our skillful driver. It was so much fun. Even though there were a lot of other cars & heaps of people around, it was a joyful experience and we before catching up with all those others we had some ‘lone time’ in the desert, too.
After driving for about 45 mins around the dunes, watching some buggies having fun in the sands & enjoying the beautifully tempered, soft sand ourselves, we continued our drive back on the road. We stopped for sunset again in the desert which made the sand shine even more red with it’s beautiful soft end-of-day light.
Last stop of the day was a desert camp where we not only were fed, but also saw some ‘traditional’ shows such as a belly dance and a fire show. Also we would have been able to ride camels & to touch falcons which were shown round be some Arabic.
PS: the car sliding is ours. Taj left us at one spot & was driving a few circles around us so that we could also get some action shots. They came out pretty well, huh?
