Mount Batur Volcano Trek

Wow, this was an adventure. To call it a trek or hike is the understatement of the year. It was a serious climb. Started as dangerous and went into crazy later on. But let me tell the story from the beginning …

We were picked up at our hotels at 2am in the morning. Then we’d be driving through Bali for about an hour to a place somewhere close by Mount Batur where we were served a true Bali breakfast: Bali coffee (which is finely milled coffee brewed in the cup without filter) and a banana pancake. Mt. Batur is a still active volcano – the last eruption took place in 2000, so, you never know when will be the next … At about 4am we finally started the ascend towards Mt. Batur with a local guide at hand. For a non-understandable reason, this guide provided us with only two torches for 6 people – where anything less than one per person was just irresponsible & dangerous. The climb went on rocky terrain, with rolling rocks and a slippery ash-layer super steep up. I felt like we were racing to the top … I wished we would have had more time to enjoy the views & the amazing stars (including a very visible milky way). But we were rushing up … all with not enough light in pitch darkness. Still I wished we would have been up at the top at least 30 minutes earlier – while we were still climbing, and hence, watching the steep path under our feet – the light started to come… Eventually we reached the top and the views were truly breathtaking. We were served another breakfast – this time banana sandwiches and hard boiled eggs – which they boil in the still active volcano. The descend was not any easier, even though we finally had enough light – but the ash layer and rolling rocks made it hard guesswork when you’ll fall the next time …

I’m super happy we made it down in one piece! No broken bones! Just as expected a super bad muscle pain which made it difficult to walk for the next few days.
